Here are two extracts from two videos that will be part of the course Understand Real American English.

Watch the video and try to answer the comprehension questions.

Don’t worry if you don’t catch everything. It’s not easy.

Test #1: Driving around, with Jennifer

Meet my cousin Jennifer! She’s from Louisiana.
In this video, we’re driving around her neighborhood and making conversation.

Try to understand and answer these questions:

  • Why are they making these changes?
  • Why do they want to move?
  • Where are they moving to? Near or far?

Test #2: Talking about business, with Paul

Let me introduce you to my brother-in-law, Paul. He is the owner of a company called Crooked Letter Brewing Company, a craft beer company in Mississippi.

In this video, we’re talking about how his business is going.

Try to understand and answer these questions:

  • How is business going for Paul?
  • What is the transition that Paul’s business is going through?
  • What is Paul’s job title?
  • What has changed in Mississippi?
  • Why is it exciting, especially for Paul and his business?

“We’re re-doing our living room. So, let me show you the couch.”

2.What rooms are they going to change?
We’re going to paint the kitchen, living room, bathroom…

…’cause we’re eventually going to sell the house.

4.Why do they want to move?
We just need a bigger house.

5.Where are they moving to? Near or far?
Wherever we can find around here… (=somewhere in the surrounding area, so near.)

“The laws changed in Mississippi, so we’re one of the last states in the country who passed on-site beer sales.”

“You can come to a brewery, sample the beers, tour, and now walk out with a six-pack.”
